It was commissioned by English King Henry VIII in honor of the birth of His Son, Prince Henry. The King was an ardent Sportsman and loved The Tournament. As such , in February of 1511 – He commenced with a Royal Tournament. All facets of the spectacle was ''recorded'' on The Roll. King Henry Himself was a participant, and He is shown as well in ''Combat'' during a Joust. The Roll is an excellent source of what ''Life'' in The Tudor Court looked like.
