PRENDE

From the Southeastern European Nation of Albania, ''Prende'' was a Pagan Goddess associated with several elements of weather. In ancient times, Prende was the wife of The God of Thunder and Sky known as Perendi. When angered, He would smite the land with storms and bad weather. As a means of calming Him, and giving hope to man, Prende would transform Herself into bands of colors and rise into The Sky. This was said to be the genesis of The Rainbow. When Christianity (Catholic) became dominant, Prende would be associated with both Anne (Mother of Mary), and of Mary Herself. Her personification in later Art is that of an Angel.

NANAHAUTZIN

A ''Creation Deity'', The Aztec God ''Nanahautzin'' is associated with The Sun. According to His origins, Nanahautzin noted that The God Quetzalcoatl was about to destroy The Earth to usher in a ''New Age of Man'' (which according to Aztec Tradition, occurs at The Gods will). Sympathetic to Mankind, Nanahautzin cast Himself into the dying Sun and set Himself on fire. As a result, He became the ''New Sun'', so that Man would always have Light.

PIGNORA IMPERII

According to Ancient Roman belief, the very existence of The Empire was linked to various ''Sacred Objects'' which as long as they were kept ''safe and maintained'' meant that The Empire would endure. The task of this protection was left to the various Sects of The Vestal Priestesses. History states that these examples of what was known as Pignora Imperii were a wooden statue of The Goddess Minerva, which was once housed in The City of Troy (surviving destruction). In addition, a collection of Shields which reputedly came from The God Mars, and were given to the Second Ruler of Rome. These traditions would remain for generations as staples of Roman Culture and it's religious connections. When Rome became Christian under Emperor Constantine I, it was decreed that in addition to the extinguishing of The Vestal Flame, all Pignora Imperii were destroyed.

''BEWARE CATHERINE'S HILL!''

Picturesque Catherine's Hill is located near the Township of Franklin, off State Route 182 in The State of Maine. But it's traditional Maine beauty is marred by a long told Ghost Tale that goes back to the year 1860. So ''popular'' it seems, that the following ''Spectre'' was supposedly last ''see'' as late as 2014. The origin story of the haunting has two versions. One a 19th Century version, involving a Carriage and a 20th Century one, about an automobile. Both versions involve a girl named Catherine. ''She'' was fatally injured in an accident on SR 182, near a small mountain, which would eventually bear Her name. In the crash, Catherine loses Her head. It is unclear if She was driving too fast or lost control. Through the years thereafter, people driving by say they sometimes ''see'' a ''bloody and headless Phantom'' wandering the lonely road. One ''must'' acknowledge ''Her'' and not run away. In this lies the ''curse''. Failure to acknowledge ''Catherine'' will lead to Her ''appearing'' in the back seat of your car. This ''vision'' will be so terrifying, that you will lose control and crash yourself....

''NO RESTING IN PEACE''.....THE CASE OF BLACK HOPE CEMETERY

Most are familiar with The American Horror Ghost film from the 1980s known as ''Poltergeist''. In it, an average Family moves into what they think is their ''dream home'' and Community of Track Homes. What they find out is that their Community was built over a former Cemetery in which Developers claimed they ''moved the bodies'' (they did not). As predictable, paranormal activities abound to a violent conclusion. While ''fiction'', it would not surprise some that such things did in fact happen (or is claimed to have). Enter the story of ''Black Hope'' Cemetery near Crosby, Texas.

The State of Texas was a former Confederate State during The Civil War of 1861-1865. Afterwards, many former Slaves stayed in The State and tried to make a life for themselves. However, Reconstruction and the many years of ''Racial Segregation'' Laws made life at best ''difficult. Black Americans were not even allowed to be buried in ''Mixed'' or White Graveyards when they died. As a result, many ''Black Cemeteries'' sprang up in out of the way locations, often rudely built (and not designed to last).

Black Hope Cemetery lasted from the 1870s until the last internment in 1939. By the 1960s, it was long forgotten and overgrown by Nature. In fact, many of the Headstones had long since crumbled or been defaced. When a Housing Development Agency brought the land, they ''claimed'' (later), that they did not know that it was a former Cemetery. It was a marketed Housing Community in the late 1970s and 1980s. The Haney Family eagerly brought a home in the quiet and peaceful location. It increase their value in the Home, they decided to build a pool. However, as it was being dug workers found a disturbing discovery. Two remains (skeletons) in decayed caskets. They remains were possibly a married couple, for two gold wedding rings were also discovered. Local Law Enforcement was called to investigate.

It was then determined (through an old local man who had buried many of the deceased), that The Housing Development was built (in some sections) over The Cemetery, In later Lawsuits, The Housing Company claimed they had no idea that there were still bodies present. The land was simply bulldozed over. The Haney's decided to honor the disturbed graves of ''The Couple'' and reinstalled them with a memorial. Unfortunately, this didn't work.

Strange activities began to occur in 1982. Unplugged electrical devices would suddenly ''come to life'' in the middle of the night. Intense ''cold spots'' would begin to develop (even during hot summer months). Most odd, ''voices'' (described as ''whispers'') would be heard quite often. And it was not just The Haney's. Others in the Neighborhood reported similar ''happenings''. Some stated that in either their front or backyard, ''square shaped'' sinkholes (depressions) would appear overnight. Shaped as a grave, the phenomenon happened overs the years when earth settles over such over the years (often as a result of coffins collapsing under years of weight from water seepage. As soon as these depressions were filled, they would ''re-appear'' in a day. Oddly, most lawsuits against The Development Agency were lost by Homeowners (those that sued). And while some still live in the area (stating they never had ''any'' issues), many of the Homes involved with ''activities'' still are vacant........(Anyone What to buy a Cheap House ''

DED MOROZ

Known throughout Russia and surround Regions, ''Ded Moroz'' was akin to the persona of ''Father Christmas'' and ''Santa Claus''. He is probably a piece of ''leftover'' cultural Pagan beliefs, with possible origins to the 1st Century AD. His name translates to ''Grandfather Frost'', as His story is related to the Winter Season. His traits involved giving food and gifts to ''good children'', usually on New Years Eve. Ded Moroz is portrayed as a ''kindly Old Man'', who wears a Blue Robe and carries a Shepherd's Staff. Popular until the rise of Communism in the early 20th Century, Ded Moroz was banned from Public functions at in all Soviet and Bloc Nations. With the fall of Socialism, Ded Moroz (which was still observed in secret), became a popular Christmas and New Years practice. Many Homes place statues of Ded Moroz in Homes or in yards, and some Regions have people portraying Him in costume.

DRAGON TURTLE

Ancient Chinese Mythology often portrays various astronomical and natural phenomenon with Creatures of ''epic'' proportions. One such is The Dragon Turtle. A massive Beast, hundreds of feet in length, it has the head of a Dragon. The Dragon Turtle is a water dwelling Creature. It was most associated with harmony and balance in Nature. Later in History, The Dragon Turtle was given a more menacing persona, and was said to protect the waters around China from Enemies. Chinese Mapmakers, much like their counterparts in Europe adopted The Dragon Turtle as a ''warning image'' for ''unknown locations'' in the ''known World''.

A common Legend among many Polynesian Peoples of The South Pacific, The ''Aitu'' are seen as ''Demon Spirits''. They are the cause and effect of most ''bad luck'' and calamity that would (or could) befall someone. While invisible to the naked eye, The Aitu take the forms of common features found within Nature. Their very name means ''to lament''. Often, special prayers were invoked by People, prior to going out into the Jungles, as a means of protection from The Aitu.

DZUNUKWA

A Legendary Beast indicative to several Northern Canadian Native Tribes, The Dzunukwa is seen by some Arcane Historians as an early example of The Sasquatch Mythos, Said to be a Giant Spirit, ''She'' is associated with wealth if seen. However, Dzunukwa has a slightly darker edge. It is said She steals children from their Families and eats them!. However, She has very poor eyesight and it is easy to avoid Her contact. In addition, Dzunukwa is rather ''slow witted'' and can be tricked as well. Commonly included in many Totem displays, a specialized ritual is performed, with a Tribe member wearing a wooden mask to represent Her (to bring wealth to a Tribe).

MAMBO

In Haitian Voodoo, a Mambo is a Priestess of the Religion. Translated from West African dialects as ''Mother of Magic'', The Mambo guides, conducts and runs a Temple. Unlike other Religions that feature some form of hierarchy, Mambos have none. However, older and more experienced ones are looked upon for more complex or dangerous conjuring. Mambos have the ability to serve as conduits for Loas (Spirits), and they frequently allow themselves to be ''possessed'' in order for The Deity to be able to communicate with those in need of The Spirits ''abilities''. Mambos are ''selected'', normally at birth and are often related to a previous or ''serving Mambo. It takes many years of training to discern one's power and strengths. At a pre-determined age, the Initiate undergoes a long ceremony which involves water, fire and seclusion. This ritual is key to establishing a Mambo's connection to a Loa. In addition to readying their spiritual connections to The spirits, Mambos become experts in folk remedies and determining what form of ''treatment'' is needed.

HOUNGAN

As we have seen with The Mambo (Voodoo Priestess), ''She'' has a Male counterpart known as The Houngan. Unlike The Mambo, Houngan's have a simple but nonetheless hierarchy system. These are Junior and High Priests. Only a High Priest can ''ordain'' either a Junior or conversely, ''promote'' one to High. Like The Mambo, they are selected when very young for perceived ''abilities'' which are noticed. It takes many years of training and familiarization with herbal and spiritual ''magic''. They too undergo a ceremony involving Water, Fire and Seclusion as part of their initiation. Houngan also ''specialize'' in a particular ''linage'' of Deities (Loas). In this way, 3 or 4 Houngans can be brought together to confer with various Ghede (Guides) and related. Some Houngans also specialize in ''White'' and ''Dark'' magic. This is important for the removal of curses or to ''resurrect'' The Dead (Zombie). Some Houngans still adopt the ''face painting'' image of a human skull. This is done so that they can ''accept'' a Loa's Spirit (via physical possession).

ACHLIS

From Ancient Roman Arcane History of the 1st BC, comes The Achlis. Possibly a now extinct Cryptoid, The Achlis was said to be the size of an Elk. However, they had very strange characteristics. The most telling was their large mouth with lips that literally touched the ground. Being an issue with eating, it was said the Achlis had to graze ''backwards''. The Beast developed the ability to move rearwards as naturally as one would walk forwards. The Achlis slept inside large hollow trees, which had it easier to hunt them, apparently into extinction. No skeletal evidence remains however, and many think they were simply a ''Fable'' Creature.

YAN-GANT-Y-TAN

A ''Hellspawn'' (Demon of no Hierarchy), ''Yang-Gant-Y-Tan'' is related to Old France (12th Century AD). His right hand was said to ''glow as fire'', Of ''frightful visage'', encountering Him at night causes one's own fire (torch, etc) to extinguish, thus becoming lost in the darkness. The mere sight of Yan-Tang-Y-Tan was seen as a bad omen, with ill fortune sure to follow. It was said that leaving a small bag of gold on a path He travels will keep Him away. He was first mentioned in the French Demonic Catalog known as The ''Dictionnarie Infernal'' in 1863.

VEVE

''Veve'' is s form of religious symbolism used in Haitian Voodoo. It is based on various types of West Congo pictography relating to the written word in those African Tribes. The Veve is a link in conjuring various Loas, and is initiated by drawing the various images onto the ground with red colored gunpowder or related powder substance. Sometimes, ash wood is burnt and used. Various rituals which require sacrifices are performed on a Veve. Permanent drawings are often hung on walls of followers as a form of Iconography to their ''chosen'' Deity.

THE CURSE OF JULIA BROWN

Born in 1845 Louisiana (possibly), Julia Brown was Creole. She lived outside the small Village of Fenier, was married and had the somewhat ''normal'' occupation as ''Midwife''. In reality, Brown was a powerful Voodoo Priestess, known for Her ability to treat all forms of ailments. Both Black and White Peoples came from miles around for Her abilities. In time, people began to take advantage of Julia, often refusing to pay Her for ''services rendered'' or even giving Her ''due respect''. Julia began to sour towards The Town of Fenier. After Brown's husband died in 1914, She took a seriously evil outlook towards The Town. Several weeks prior to Her death in 1915, Brown was heard often walking through Town singing loudly ''One Day I Will Die, and Take The Whole Town With Me!'' In mid 1915, Brown did die. Perhaps The Town felt bad about how they treated Brown, for they all turned out for Her funeral. This gesture didn't work. Withing weeks after Her death a severe Hurricane struck Fenier. So sudden and fierce, that all but several of the 300 Residents lived. It is still said that skeletons from Fenier still ''pop up'' from the surrounding swamps and bayous. Many bodies were recovered and buried in a Mass Grave. Other, well were not. As one can imagine, Fenier never really grew back as a Village. Much paranormal activities have been documented there over the years, some even photographed. Apparently Julia kept Her promise.

MANA

A concept among Polynesian and other Pacific Cultures, ''Mana'' is the idea relative to all things in the World and Universe creates energy. This energy is neither seen as good or bad. It is those Humans that seek to use said energy for such, that makes it so. Originally linked only to storms and thunder, as the ideology spread, so too did it's applications. An object need not be (or have been) a living thing. Some cultures in The South Pacific assign Mana as a form of Animism. Most Cultures do not portray Mana with a personification. Those that due, such as The Maori, often show Mana as a male Being, often invoked prior to Warrior initiation ceremonies and likewise ''called upon'' prior to battle.

NULLARBOR NYMPH

An Urban Legend which developed in Australia in the early 1970s, The Nullarbor Nymph was said to have ''lived'' in the Western Regions (Outback) of the Country. A group of Kangaroo Hunters stated they ''saw and took photos'' of what appeared to be a ''Caucasian blonde Female'', that appeared to be ''living'' with a Herd. The female looked ''feral'' as was said to be clothes in only what appeared to be a Kangaroo hide. The phot and tale soon swept thru The World. Soon many went to The Outback in hopes of possibly capturing this female, as an Australian form of ''raised by wolves'' story. Found a hoaxed story (1972), the tale still created an Urban Legend (even today), dealing with human who were raised feral by Kangaroos. Although faked, many adopted the fable as a part of Australian Culture even making statues of The ''Nullabor Nympth''.

RONG

In Vietnamese Culture, and spanning back thousands of Generations The Rong is that Culture's variation on the mythical Dragon. While some cite they ''lived'', many state that The Rong is the personification of ''wealth and prosperity''. The Rong also associated with The Universe (as a whole). In Vietnamese literature, The Rong was often a component character used to express the ''immortality'' of an Emperor or Royal Family.

Particularly liked the article on Mana. Have to say..... it's very similar in concept to how Spiritualists see the Universe.... it's neither good nor bad, but neutral. Meaning that it gives you the free will to do whatever you want in life. If you focus on the bad then the Universe will match those vibrations and return things matching those vibrations into your life, and vice-versa with the good too. It's interesting that a lot of religions, Spiritualists, even Psychologists to a degree, all mention the same kinds of things, they just have different words for describing them.

''A GOOD DOG'' – THE STORY OF ST. GUINEFORT

A popular 13th Century French tale, involved a Knight and His Dog (named Guinefort). A loyal canine, The Knight's Fa,ily loved the dog. One day, The Knight and Family left His Castle, leaving His young Son under the protection of Guinefort. When He returned home, He found the Child's room totally wrecked and blood splattered throughout. The Knight found Guniefort, His paws covered in gore. Search as The Knight and His Family could, they could not find the Child. In anger, The Knight assumed Guinefort killed His Son and slew Him. Soon after, The Knight hear crying coming from under the Boys bed. There was His Son......and the mangled body of a Viper. It seems Guinefort defended The Child from sure death. Saddened by His error, The Knight buried Guniefort in an unused well and sealed it with stones. Soon after a beautiful tree grew from the rocks. From that point forward, if anyone had a pet or animal with injury, they brought it to the well and it was healed. So popular was this belief, even The Church examined what locals now identified as ''St. Guinefort''. The Church was not too happy with a dog being so referred to and broke up the Cult by the 16th Century. Although all trace of The Well was destroyed by The Church, some still say that if one can find the spot (supposedly near Lyons), their sick animal will be healed.

''GHOSTS OF THE REGIMENT'' – STILL MORE HAUNTS FROM GETTYSBURG

As we have seen, The Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (1863), was an epic engagement of The American Civil War. The 3-day contest is seen as the ''death knell'' of The Confederate States and their last bid attempt to invade The Northern States and win their independence. Between 45 and 50,000 soldiers on both sides died in those terrible ''three days in July''. As we have also seen in previous Articles, Gettysburg today is possibly one of the most haunted placed in The US. Many hundreds of photos, investigations and even film, have been produced to prove that in some cases – some of these ''soldiers'' are still ''on duty''. The most recent Case, comes from 2015 and an American reality Film Crew, who were at The Battlefield to film their take on the reported paranormal activities.

Gettysburg is a vast place ''in the middle of nowhere''. While much of the primary Battlefield is a clearly marked National Battlefield Park, so much of the battle spilled into nearby privately owned homes and farms. Small roads cut here and there through not only the battlefield bu these properties as well. One can became very easily lost. This is what happened to out film crew. They were driving around getting their bearings for a night shoot. They sped through the small roads totally lost. The Cameraman in the back was trying to read a map and shoot ''junk shots'' from their passing video. He forgot to turn off His camera when His Production manager and him began to argue over where they were. After 10 minutes or so, they found there way to a main Road and found their way back to their Hotel. The Cameraman realized that He had been filming ''nothing''. So He ran back the play of the film for a ''quick peak''. What He saw somewhat perplexed him.

The camera picked up (from the car window), the passing tall amber saw grass which was on both sides of the road they were driving on. Suddenly, and only for a few seconds – a ''group'' of what appeared to be ''6 Men dressed as Union Soldiers'' were seen. Two of them were carrying ''both National and Regimental Colors''. No great detail of their faces or bodies could be enhanced. No great issue they thought. Probably Re-enactors (Civil War Buffs who dress as Civil war Era Soldiers). However, when the Crew did their ''research'' with The National Park Administrators, they determined that what they ''saw'' was ''something else''.

Gettysburg has very strict rules regarding battlefield usage. Such Civil war Groups (and such people are well versed in the regulations), cannot stage their battles and meetings on National Property (owing to the sacred nature of the field or region. Many are also Military Cemeteries). Most such functions happen well away from the location. Further, while The Park does have Guides known as Living Historian (Employees who dress as soldiers for Tourists), these are seasonal employees and none would be stationed at such a far away location. Most worked at the more visited locations of the battle. Perhaps, as some think – the Crew was hoaxing, trying to drum up interest in their ''Haunted Gettysburg'' Film. Or just perhaps, they accidentally captured a ''lost moment'' in time.
