The Knight is the elite troop in Stronghold 2. The Knight is excellent at both offensive and defensive combat and also has a unique ability to mount a Horse and fight with or without one.
You can mount a Knight by selecting the "Mount horse" icon once you have selected a Knight. Once you have attempted to mount a Knight, a Horse should come from the nearest Stables to the location of where the Knight is, and he will automatically mount the Horse.
Once mounted on a horse, any enemy units must first kill the horse before they can attack the Knight himself, so there are great advantages of doing so, besides the Knight moving a lot faster. The horse alone takes 9 Crossbow bolts to kill.
Note: Prior to Stronghold 2 patch 1.4.1, a bug existed where if you moved your Knight while a horse was en route from the stables, they would be unable to mount the horse. You can find a list of all patch updates in our downloads section which will help you to upgrade and fix this problem if it is occurring for you.
To dismount a Knight, simply select him and then left click on the "Dismount" icon. The Horse will then return automatically to the stables. Note that you must have a Stables constructed and horses must be readily available in the Stables in order to mount a Knight on a horse.
Knights can deal a great amount of damage to other units, and they can take a lot in themselves as well, but cost the most to recruit in requirements. You will need both a Sword, produced from a Blacksmith's Workshop, and Armour, produced by an Armourer's Workshop in order to recruit a Knight. In addition to this, because of the huge advantages of having a Knight, you will also need 200 gold and 50 Honour. Honour can be produced by the means shown in this article.
You can only recruit Knights from the rank of Duke, however you can gather weapons in advance due to the fact the relevant production buildings become available in advance.
The Blacksmith's Workshop becomes available at the rank of Royal Champion and the Armourer's Workshop becomes available at the earlier rank of Knight Bachelor. You will also need a single recruit from the campfire before you can recruit a Knight.
Similarly to Swordsmen, Knights can easily get overwhelmed by defence systems such as Burning Logs, Ballistae or pitch ditches. This is primarily due to the fact the units move so slowly. Knights will also struggle against units such as Horse Archers, even whilst mounted, simply because Horse Archers are so versatile and can move fast.
Tip: Knights can cause complete terror on the battlefield and always work best on horseback and in a group. If you can manage to mass-produce Knights, then this is an extremely effective tactic and will almost certainly win you any game. I recommend using groups of 32 Knights at a time, or, if you cannot afford that many, the smaller group of 16 Knights at a time can work very well. You can also number these groups using the relevant keyboard shortcuts.
